Being a grandparent is a very special, unique opportunity.
I am not a grandparent yet, I am old enough to be, as I was a late bloomer in the having-children department. So we are very blessed to have our co-facilitator Mary Atkins work with us on this course. Mary is a mother to three children and has eight grand children. So we are in very good hands. Mary brings to the course her rich experience and wisdom, which I know will benefit us all.
At Blossoming Families we run a course called “The Joy of Grandparenting”. Let us show you how to enjoy the three roles of being a grandparent:

The flower I see that relates to Grandparenting is wisteria.
Wisteria is a beautiful vine that produces gorgeous purple, pink or white blossoms. It reminds me of old age timeless things. The beauty of the ancient vines with its twisted, turned and knotted branches brings an age-old theme to a garden.
The wisteria creates shade and shelter beneath it, allows the light to shine through it and is a vine that holds many branches and flowers, which are totally supported by the vine. So are you as grandparents. You provide shelter for us, as our parents. You make yourself available, a strong safe shelter to come to; you embrace us with love, wisdom and support. You allow us to shine, by being there, showering us with love and support us in our role as parents. You beam when you are with your grandchildren. There is such a rich connection and love for your grandchildren, we see it in your eyes when you are with our children and talk with them. You are wise through your experience as parents and your life experience.

Look at the beauty of those flower blooms, they are truly magnificent. Look at the colour and the richness of the colour. So don’t say you have nothing to offer. You are rich in so many areas and willing to give and share. Even if you judge yourself as not being a great parent, with your grandchildren and by beginning new relationships with your children, you can become a better parent and experience your grandparenting role to the fullest degree.

Each wisteria is different to the next. So too are people. We are unique creatures. However, we can lead our lives and never come to know who we really are and discover the joy of living from our real self. I suppose when your children begin to leave the nest or have left, your whole life can change and you may realise you have either lived for your children and/or lived for your career. What we are offering to you is to know your real self, identify who you really are, what you would love now and how you would love to live your life from this point. To come to know who you are is a very liberating experience because suddenly a whole new life, with possibly different values and attitudes emerge. What a great time for this to happen now you are a grandparent. You have the opportunity to live a richer life for yourself and with your children and grandchildren. You can re-define your relationships by coming from your true self: I think that is very liberating for you and for them.
